In the rural regions of India, traditional herbal remedies provided by local Traditional Community Healthcare Providers (TCHPs) have historically addressed primary healthcare requirements. These TCHPs utilize over 6,500 medicinal plant species, around 300 animal species, and numerous metals and minerals. They hold centuries of wisdom and evolving health knowledge, passed down through generations via oral transmission within families or acquired under the Guru Shishya Parampara. This is recognized by TCHP. TCHPs possess a wealth of diverse, ecosystem-specific, and ethnic community knowledge and skills. Preserving this invaluable rural healthcare heritage is essential to safeguarding India’s civilization.
From 2010 to 2012, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), with support from the Quality Council of India (QCI) and the Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions (FRLHT) under the mentorship of the Ministry of AYUSH, initiated a pilot project.
